Let me tell you something: I’ve been to Leavenworth several times, most recently last September, and while there is always German playing on the public speakers downtown or being played live, not once have I ever heard carillon music. There’s plenty of polka and oomp-pah-pah and yodling and folk, but that’s because you can stroll around and play accordion and tuba. You can’t wander with a carillon or pipe organ outfitted with bells… and unless I’ve missed something in my tourism, there is no set of carillon bells downtown. (And in the cover photo above, that park downtown is still there but there isn’t a blade of grass left, it’s all concrete.)
So anyhow, here’s an album of music inspired by what supposedly gets played in Leavenworth. Or those authentic polka songs from Washington are played on bells in Pennsylvania for the record. The album is from 1969.
