Astroblast, for the Atari 2600 by M Network (Mattel)

Originally released for the Intellivision (by Mattel) as “Astrosmash”, this game is one of the rare few which can be played with either a joystick or a paddle controller. You control a firing base at the bottom of the screen, which you are given ten of, shooting falling asteroids and the occasional other hazard such as spinners (which cause the loss of a base if they reach the ground), homing missiles, and UFOs that fire at you. One big difference between this game and similar ones such as Atari’s Asteroids is that meteors that reach the ground deduct points, so you have to keep shooting rather than just dodging.
